The Artist

Cat Gray is a storyteller and visual poet, who discovered her talent for photoshop artistry after her family life, and white picket fence dream, had been struck by a series of devastating events.

The end of her marriage of 21-years; the collapse of her self-made family business; the destruction of her home in a devastating house fire; the departure of her youngest to attend university.  A recently turned 50 Cat Gray was in a state of grief and exhaustion. The most difficult events of her life had all been crammed into the space of three months, with no time to process. But now, she had all the silence and space she'd ever wanted, and it felt cold and desolate. 

  

"Life had thrown everything it had at me all at once and I was still standing. But not without contemplating my life and what I considered important. And art became very important to me."

Having always considered herself to be creative, Gray decided to dip her toe into the art of photo manipulation and digital art. Little did she know, she'd discover such a fierce talent.

"This whole creative, artistic journey felt like a metamorphosis — as an individual so very nearly broken yet still standing . . . as a woman finding her passion in her 50s . . . and as a newly awakened artist eager to test herself each and every day."

Years passed and now Cat Gray is an established artist, with a talent for finding the beauty in the defective. Women featuring heavily in her work, she admits a reluctance to appease the male gaze.

"I am in awe of women. Their power and resilience transcend their physical form. I don't want to patronise them by reducing them to something to gawk at. I want her story and I want to share it with the world."
